Frith directs at Bauer
Mark Frith has been appointed editorial director at Bauer. He will oversee Grazia, FHM, Zoo, Yours, Top Sante and Empire. He left Time Out in the summer after a stint of two years.
Directing not editing
Moulding a magazine is one thing, offering “strategic vision and support for the editors and publishers across the whole business” is another. Frith was the right man at the right place at heat. He had a fantastic touch which led to runaway success.
Graduates 20 years late
He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of East London, where I teach. He had been a student for a year about 20 years ago. He started his journalism on the student paper. The award named him as “editor extraordinaire”.
For such a dynamic man who obviously loves crafting magazines how will he handle the role of director? He will need to dig deep into his skills of man management.
Among the magazines he will direct my favourite, in terms of the craft of magazine production, is Yours. It is a well crafted magazine under the editorship of Valery McConnell with a circulation of 285,890, mostly pensioners.
